Puerto Rican Arepas Recipe

Puerto Rican Arepas are delicious fried bread made with wheat flour and perfectly fried. These are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. You can eat them by pairing them with rice and beans, filling them with avocado, cheese, or any other filling. I enjoy them with a warm cup of coffee for breakfast or an afternoon snack.

Puerto Rican Arepas Recipe

Our traditional Puerto Rican Arepas are a delicious twist on the classic arepas from Mexico, Venezuela, or Colombia. Our arepas are made with wheat flour instead of corn flour. You can make these arepas sweet, savory, plain, or stuffed. If you like them sweet, add one or two tablespoons of sugar to the recipe. Therefore if you like them savory feel free to add other seasonings like onion. garlic, cilantro, or any other that you like. This recipe is vegan-friendly as well.

You can also add veggies and herbs to this recipe, I recommend you to try it. Of course, if you visit Puerto Rico, you can find Puerto Rican arepas at every food stand or as we call them “kioscos de comida” around the island. These are part of our traditional street food. Another variation that is very popular in Puerto Rico is “arepas de coco” or coconut arepas. These are made with coconut flour and taste delicious as well.

This basic Puerto Rican Arepas recipe calls for:

  • all-purpose flour
  • water
  • butter
  • salt

puerto rican arepas

In addition, you can use this basic recipe to stuff them with other fillings of your liking. Furthermore, these are also great to eat with soups or with my vegan sancocho recipe. Last but not least, you can make these arepas in advance and freeze them for up to three months. Wrap each arepa in wax paper, place them inside a ziplock bag, and freeze. I haven’t tried making them in the air fryer but I think they will be ready in about 8 minutes or so. Let me know if you try!
